Group 1:
We went on a field trip to the Carrowniskey River. we went to the lower river at the Broken Bridge and we went to the upper river at Glenkeen Farm to do water sampling. we got given magnifying glasses, a map, a marker, pencil, 8 tubs, a bucket, waterproof paper and a tray, two suckers and a tweezers. Connie taught us about the water. Catherine runs Glenkeen. Mary cooked our lunch and made cupcakes for us. George drove us to Glenkeen. Mick is from the Mayo Co Co waters and Communities office. They gave us money to do the project. We found a lot of water insects in the river. we had great fun. Connie taught us how to do the water sampling. It was really easy. We had great fun shuffling and kicking stones to try to find the insects in the water. Connie is an expert. We discovered mayflies, stone flies, caddis larvae and cased caddis larvae. This tells us that the Carrowniskey River is not polluted because the insects would die if it was dirty. We looked at the insects under the microscope and identified them. We knew what they were because a mayfly has three tails and a stone fly has two tails. we found some crab like insects that we could not idenitfy. We put them in a jar by accident and they ate each other.

Yesterday we went on a biodiversity water sampling trip. We went on the bus to the river beside the broken bridge and we set up our equipment and started sampling . Connie taught us how to get the animals into the net. So we kicked up the rocks hoping that the insects would swim into the net. Then we poured the water and the insects into the bucket. Then we labelled the pots with their names. The names and letters are A is Mayflies and they have three tails, B is Stoneflies and they have two tails, C is Caddis Larvae and they have cases. Then we sucked up the insects (with out hurting them ) and put them into the right pots. Then we travelled to the upper part of Carrowniskey River at Glenkeen. We met Catherine and Mary there. We did more sampling there. When we were in the middle of it we went into Glenkeen forThen we went outside and finished off our sampling. Then Connie measured the width of the river. She also took the pH of the river. Then Connie taught us how warm and cold the river was. It was very cold at Glenkeen but it was very warm at the Broken Bridge. If Mayflies are in the river then the river is very heathy. The place was nice at the bb.

Another group found a worm that was green and killed other bugs. Our group had a dancing caddis larvae. It was funny. The dancing caddis larva was my favourite. We called it LAVA. We went into the restaurant for a lovely meal. Mary made us buns. After lunch we went back outside to sort out the insects into a jar. We took the insects back inside and talked about what we had found. then we chose one of the insects to look at under the microscope. our group chose to look at a baby daddy long legs. it looked really cool and we could see its legs really close up and his mouth was open. At the Broken bridge we found a fish.
