After-School ServiceOur After School Club is run in the school between the hours of 1.45pm and 2.45pm. This club is for children in Junior and Senior Infants. It costs €4 per child per day. It is fully supervised, runs from Monday to Friday and the children partake in a wide range of activities. Please phone the school on (098)68651 or email [email protected] for more information.
School GardenWe plant a variety of vegetables and herbs each year including cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, scallions, beetroot, onions, turnip, broadbeans, peas, lettue, rhubarb, strawberries and potatoes.
The children prepare, sow and look after the garden themselves. We get a huge amount of help from parent volunteers and local people each year to get our garden going. Thank you! Music Lessons & Instrument RentalThe children from 2nd class upwards take part in music lessons once a week with Ms. Mary Finn. The children start learning traditional Irish tunes on a tin whistle.
There are a number of instruments in the school which have been purchased with funds from Féile Chois Cuain. These include flutes, accordions, fiddles and a concertina. The children from 3rd class upwards get the opportunity to select an instrument and have the use of it for half of the school year. Mary Finn will guide the children in learning how to use the new instrument. As a result, the children in the senior classes play a wide range of instruments. We perform at the Mol an Óige concert every year in Louisburgh as part of Féile Chois Cuain. In 2023 and 2024, we entered the Maigh Eo Thiar (West Mayo) Scór na bPáistí competition. SportsThe children in the school take part in Cumann na mBunscoil games every year. Parents volunteer to help train the children and prepare them these matches. Mayo GAA provide a coach once a week to train the children usually in the last term.
Other sports we take part in include tag rugby, Boccia (inclusive indoor bowling game), set- dancing, sean-nós dancing, horse riding at the local stables, surfing at Carrowniskey beach and safe cycling. We travel to Westport Leisure Park for 6 weeks every year for swimming lessons. The children become more confident in the water, learn safety techniques and have great fun! School GroundsWe are very lucky in Killeen NS to have our school situated in the countryside on extensive grounds. Our play areas include a yard for the Junior children, a yard for the Senior children, a basketball court, an all-weather pitch, a running track and grassy areas for both Juniors and Seniors.
ITWe have a trolley of Chromebooks available for every class to use on a rota basis. Children use the Chromebooks to research topics and to type their poems, reports and essays.
