Last May, Jo came into school and planted two different types of potatoes with us.
We planted Lumper potatoes (the old variety) in one half of the bed and pink Santa potatoes (the modern type) in the other half of the bed.
We wanted to see if the Lumper potatoes would be more susceptible to the blight disease than the Santa potatoes.
During the summer, Jo noticed that the leaves of the Lumper potatoes were turning yellow and brown quicker than the Santa potatoes.
At the end of September (photos above), Jo came back in and we dug up the potatoes. It was great fun and we all got our hands dirty.
We spent approximately an even amount of time digging up both sides of the bed.
From the photos above, it is clear to see that we dug up more Santa potatoes (pink basin) than Lumper potatoes (grey basin).
The Santa potatoes were also slightly bigger than the Lumper variety which were used during the famine in Ireland.
