Making Waves With Words

We are very pleased to have three new booklets in our school library today, packed with stories and poems written by the children for the National Marine Creative Writing Competition 2026.

NINE entries have been selected to be entered into the national competition, comprising short stories, raps, poems and messages.

Bualadh bos mór to Jesse (1st class), Katelyn (2nd class), James G (2nd class), Niall (3rd class), Reeva (4th class), Kieran (4th class), Rory (5th class), Rose (5th class) and Clíona (6th class) on their excellent entries.

They brought the theme of "A message from the waves" to life with great imagination.

Congratulations to our award-winning artist, Liliana Austin!

We are delighted to celebrate the achievement of our student, Liliana Austin, who has won the Art Competition in conjunction with Green Schools: Marine Environment. This year’s theme, “Every Sea Tells a Story,” invited students to reflect on the importance of our oceans — and Liliana’s artwork captured this message with creativity and depth.

Liliana has been awarded a €100 voucher and a family hotel stay in Dublin the night before the awards ceremony. Bualadh bos mór di 👏

5. Plastic trouble in the sea: A Guillemot's Tale

Ask your child to tell you the story of the guillemot who was found very weak on Carramore Beach.

The poor sea bird had eaten what looked like food- but it wasn't food at all. When Louise looked inside his crop, she found only blue plastic and black plastic.

Sadly, the guillemot died bcause his tummy was full of things he couldn't digest.

Plastic litter in the sea can look shiny and tasty to birds. But it hurts them instead of helping them.

Let's play our part to keep our oceans plastic free: by picking rubbish and using less plastic.

That way, guillemots and all their sea friends can live safely.

1. Sea-ing the change! Our Green Schools Marine Environment adventure begins!

The West Mayo / Maigh Eo Thiar Scór competition took place in Kilmeena yesterday evening and our school was very well represented by Áine Conneely, Ellen Dyar, Jasmine O'Malley and Róisín Keating.

Comhghairdeas mór do Jasmine who WON the solo singing category and now proceeds to Scór na bPáistí County Final on Saturday 8th March.

Very well done to Áine in the sean-nós dancing category and also to Ellen, Rósín, Áine and Jasmine in the instrumental category which was of a very high standard. There is no shortage of exceptional talent here in West Mayo in music, song and dance.

Míle buíochas to the parents of the children for getting them together to practise. Warm thanks to Christina and past pupil Seamie for their musical arrangements and tuition.
