🌿Here is the requested recipe for the weedkiller we used:🌿 5L white vinegar 2 cups of table salt Dab of washing up liquid / liquid soap Make sure and mix the salt and vinegar well or it may just end up in a clump at the bottom of the sprayer or watering can. The liquid soap simply helps the vinegar to remain on the leaves for longer without running off. We have since heard that horticultual vinegar contains 20% acetic acid, so this would be better for tougher weeds. The vinegar we used had 4.5% acetic acid. O'Malley's Builders' Providers and Gala both sell 5L of vinegar. Happy weeding! |

Last week, we shared with you how we’re preparing for our 50th anniversary celebrations while keeping our next Green Schools goal in mind: Marine Environment.
Instead of using chemical weedkillers that can be harmful to aquatic life, , we made our own solution: a mix of salt, vinegar, and a little washing-up liquid. It’s safe, simple, and gentle on the environment. Well… drumroll please! Here are the after photos — and we’re delighted to say it worked! The weeds have died, the school grounds are looking tidy and cared for, and best of all, we’ve kept harmful chemicals out of the ecosystem. Small actions add up to big changes. We’re proud to show the wider community that sustainability can be simple and effective! We're deeee-lighted that our school has recently been awarded the Green Flag for Global Citizenship and Energy. This award recognises all the work we’ve done to save energy. While we haven’t yet collected our flag (watch this space, we are heading to Claremorris on Tuesday), we’re already casting our eyes forward to our next Green Schools flag: Global Citizenship: Marine Environment. In line with this, we are being mindful of how our actions on land affect our rivers, seas, and oceans. Take a look at us hard at work preparing the grounds for our 50th anniversary celebrations — but with a twist!
Instead of reaching for shop-bought chemical weedkillers, which can run off into waterways and harm aquatic life, we went the natural route. Our eco-friendly solution? A simple mix of salt, vinegar, and a dab of washing-up liquid. Not only is it kind to the planet, but it's also surprisingly effective. Don’t believe us? Check back here in a few days for the “after” photos to see the results for yourself! We're proud to be celebrating 50 years of learning, and just as proud to be protecting the planet for the next 50. Hard luck to our girls' team who were beaten in their quarter final game this morning by a strong Ballintubber side. But as always, an outstanding effort, attitude and game by our Killeen girls. Many thanks to parent Claire for all her support. Best of luck to Ballintubber going forward.
Don't forget to mark your calendars to come celebrate with us on Saturday May 31st. The day will begin with mass at the school at 2pm, followed by performances, refreshments and reminiscing until 5pm. There will be a social for adults with music and finger food in P. Dans later that evening. Please spread the word as we would love to see as many past pupils, teachers, staff members and friends as possible on the day. Sincere thanks to everyone involved for the work done so far.Ceolchoirm den scoth a bhí ann oiche de hAoine.
